The answer mainly depends on whether your home has conduits. See the pros and cons, and why most installations today are hybrid.
It's one of the first questions people ask when they decide to get an alarm. The short answer: you don't have to choose. S PRO and AEOLUS control panels are hybrid, which means they accept wired and wireless peripherals at the same time. The right question is which part of your home you'll cover in which way.
Wired peripherals
Every detector and every magnetic contact is wired to the control panel.
- Pros: no batteries to change, unaffected by interference and usually a lower cost per point.
- Cons: they need conduits or trunking. In a home that's already lived in, that means building work or visible cables.
It's the obvious choice for a new build or a full renovation, when the conduits go in from the start.
Wireless peripherals
The detectors communicate with a wireless receiver, SXP 48 for S PRO or HXP 48 for AEOLUS, on 868 MHz.
- Pros: quick installation with no dust or damage, easy to move if the layout changes, ideal for rented or listed buildings.
- Cons: the batteries need changing every few years and the cost per point is higher.
On S PRO, wireless peripherals are two-way: the control panel confirms every message and continuously supervises the status of each device. If a detector stops responding or its battery runs low, you know straight away.
What about the outdoor siren?
Often the hardest cable to run is the one that has to reach the façade. For that case there's DIONE Wireless: self-powered, with a 14 Ah lithium battery. The W version works with S PRO, while the U version works with any control panel via the included transceiver.
A rule of thumb
| Your status | What we recommend |
|---|---|
| New build or renovation | Wired almost everywhere, wireless remote control for convenience |
| Occupied home with little conduit | Hybrid: wired where there is conduit, wireless everywhere else |
| Rented or listed building | Mostly wireless, with a wireless outdoor siren |
